MIKE SMITH: December 6, 1943 - February 28, 2008

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

ROCKNOTE: Our regular post, with Moulty Moulton’s interview, will return in the next entry. For now, I bring you this special report:

It’s hard to really know how to put this into words, Rockaholics, so I’ll give it to ya straight:

Mike Smith, the legendary organist/lead vocalist of the Dave Clark Five, is dead.

As many of you know, the man with the most magnificent ”growl” in the business was suffering from tetraplegia after a terrible fall at his Spanish hacienda in 2003 (see: http://www.therockrelic.com/glad-all-over-2/). Friends ranging from Peter Noone to Bruce Springsteen and “Little Stevie” Van Zandt helped raise attention to and funds to relive Mike’s plight. Paul Shaffer of “The Late Show with David Letterman” organized a benefit on his behalf, with stars like The Zombies, Peter and Gordon, Billy J Kramer and others.

No doubt, we’ve lost a giant in the industry. From his amazing vocals to his warmth for fans, young and old – to his amazing determination to live and show his love for both fans and family – Mike will definitely be missed by every Rockaholic throughout the universe.

Now, I’m not gonna end this post with my regular tagline. Rather, let me just share what has been posted on Mike’s site concerning his passing. Before I do, remember, I’ll see ya on the “flip” side:

“Mike Smith, the lead singer and keyboard player of The Dave Clark Five, one of the premier bands to emerge during the 1960’s “British Invasion”, died today from pneumonia at Stoke Mandeville Hospital outside of London. His devoted wife, Arlene, who is known as Charlie, was by his side. Smith was 64 years old. Smith, who was due to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame with his band mates on Monday, March 10th, was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit yesterday morning with a chest infection, a complication from a spinal cord injury he sustained in September, 2003 that left him a tetraplegic (paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body). Smith had been in the hospital since the accident, and was just released in December 2007 when he moved into a specially-prepared home near the hospital with his wife. Prior to his hospitalization yesterday, arrangements were being made to transport Smith to New York so he could personally attend the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.” “According to Smith’s agent, Margo Lewis of TCI in New York, “These last five years were extremely difficult for Mike. I am incredibly saddened to lose him, his energy and his humor, but I am comforted by the fact that he had the chance to spend his final months and days at home with his loving wife, Charlie, whom he adored, instead of in the hospital, and that he was able to attend a recent concert in London by his good friend, Bruce Springsteen. He was extremely excited and honored to have been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and I am glad that he will be remembered as a “Hall of Famer,” because he was in so many ways.”“Dear friends,I spoke with Charlie Smith just moments before receiving the above press release. She told me that Mike passed away peacefully last night, confident of heaven, after exchanging “I love you” with her. Mike’s health had declined rather suddenly this past week. While the above press release mentions some celebrities, Mike was also very thankful to his many fans/friends who sacrificially gave to provide him his wheelchair, his van, and most of all, the encouragement and prayers needed to continue these past years. Mike will have a better view than any of us at the R&R Hall of Fame Induction, not to mention an even more glorious induction into eternity.

This website will not pass out further specifics, exept as directed by TCI or by Charlie Smith. I cannot respond to your e-mails to answer further questions at this time. If you would like to send a sympathy e-mail (no downloads, pics, music or e-cards), feel free, I will collect them, and send them on to Charlie. The e-mail address here is theboltons@rpa.net In our time of sadness, let us remember that his music and memory live on in many of us. He has left this world a better place, and has gone on to a place that is better still. - RKB”

Introducing A True Superstar … (By Request)

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

NOTE: This is gonna be short because I wanted to get a pic up here ASAP. The regularly-scheduled posts will return in a coupla clicks. But, for now, THIS is ultimately more important:

I was asked for a photo of him so folks could focus on the man so many people are praying for! So, thanks to his wonderful daughter, Lyn, may I introduce …

PETER A. DINTINO
This is the dynamic drummer, resilient rocker, partaker of prime pizza — and fantastic friend — who, at this moment, is fighting a tremendous battle against a formidable foe called “leukemia”.
I remember, when talking with Pete just before he went into the hospital (Ron Ryan was also on the line in the conference call), he was his usual, cheerful self: regaling us with humorous stories of rock, bragging on his lovely daughter Lyn (and, considering her undying love for her dad, I can understand!), and playing musical segments for us to enjoy.
Then he told us he was “going in”, and wouldn’t “be out” for a couple, maybe three weeks … or maybe “not at all!” But the way he said it had so much hope, so much “I will be back” in it, that you just knew he wasn’t worried about that last part … he knew he would make it back!
And still does! Here … read the first part of his little “bio” from the CaringBridge site:

“My name is Peter A. Dintino and I was diagnosed in 2003 with Chronic Lymphocyctic Leukemia (CLL). I am a 55 year male with four daughters. I have a large Italian/Irish family that I love with all my heart.I came to Stong Memorial in 2007 to have a Stem Cell Transplant. I love Jesus and can’t wait for his soon return!

I have been struggling with this disease for awhile, not only do I have CLL but I have a co-morbidity, diabetes. Other than those two ailments I am a healthy 55 yr old. I have undergone several chemo and biological therapies for my cancer. In 2006 I was recommended for a Stem Cell Transplant. We found a non-related donor that was a 9 out of 10 match. I saw my chance at a cure and I took it! I was admitted for my transplant Feb 8th and received my Stem Cells Feb 12th. I have had an acute reaction to the transplant and now have to be on artificial life support. I have not given up though, I am fighting and will continue to.

The kind of cancer I have affects my blood but manifests it self in my lymph nodes, so when you see me I may look swollen but its really all my enlarged lymph nodes. This cancer is strong and aggressive, I only have a 30% chance of making it through the Stem Cell Transplant. The cancer is strong but with your prayers and help from The Almighty I am stronger than it, so bring it on!!”

Now … does that sound like a “loser” to you? Or do you believe he’s got the Power to defeat this disease? Rockaholics, this man’s got the true super-spirit of Rock and Faith in him!!

For more updates, why don’tcha go to his CaringBridge site and leave a word of encouragement on his Guestbook?
At any rate, now ya know the face behind the heart you’re prayin’ for!

Now, if I can get permission to do so, I wanna include a little of Pete’s newest song, Criminal Intent, in the next coupla posts. If you’re not a fan of his after that, you gotta be tone-deaf!! The man’s as good, IMHO, as any Lennon (WAIT! I didn’t say “better”! I said “as good …” Don’t want any Relic Bonfires, y’know …).

Anyway, that’s it for the time being. For now, keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with Pete and the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side …

A Few Odds-and-Ends

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

In case you’re wondering, the dude to your left is better remembered for his work with the Kinks. Right … you’ve got drummer Mick Avory as he is today … well, circa 2007! As it stands within the original group members: Lead guitarist Dave Davies is still performing on occasion, despite various health problems; bassist Pete Quaife lives in Canada and is a writer, and Ray Davies … well, he’s still “on-the-road”, as most of you know …

And The Beach Boys are back … at least in the name licensed for the tour that Mike Love (original BB) and Bruce Johnston (who took over for Brian Wilson) are headlining. My contacts who’ve heard them say they’re “shaky at best … (not) really very good at all.” Love and Johnston are backed by “The Beach Boys Band” now, consisting of Randell Kirsch, John Cowsill (yep … from those Cowsills!), Tim Bonhomme, Christian Love, and Scott Totten.
Incidentally, the pic you see on the right is of Brian, Dennis, Carl and 14-year-old rhythm guitarist David Marks at the signing of their first recording contract in 1962.

Ringo and People

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Of all the “one-hit wonders” in the rock world, none could outdo the group known as People … but not because of their music (their one hit was a cover of the Zombies’ I Love You). Y’see, the band dissolved because many of its members were involved in Scientology, and leader Larry Norman (pictured) didn’t dig it.
So, instead, he went back to his roots (his dad was a preacher, and he did a lot of time spreadin’ the Word on streetcorners and in prisons) and eventually was one of the founders of Contemporary Christian music!
Sad to say, but Larry died yesterday (Sunday) at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas, after an extended illness. No exact cause has been given as of this post …

Remember when I toldja about the interview where Ringo said he “didn’t miss a thing” about Liverpool (this was during his tour promoting Liverpool 8) ? Seems like he opened up a nest of hornets over there with that statement!
Seems that vandals have spray-painted over his face (it was on a sign at the Starr Fields playgroud) at his old school in the famous port town. Next to the mess was the word “traitor” written where everybody could see it!
Somehow, the ones who are over-reactive seem to forget that, in subsequent interviews (like the one he did with Craig Ferguson), he showed a lot of pride for his hometown. What he meant by the earlier statement, I’m told (and whyzzit that Beatles always need their quotes explained?), was that he didn’t miss the days he struggled so hard to make it (listen to the song …).

A QUICK WORD ON PETER DINTINO: Obviously, Pete’s still fighting for his life after the marrow transplant and stem cells. With no immune system, infections are setting in heavily. He’s on life-support right now as the docs work feverishly to control his dropping blood-pressure, fluid in the lungs, failing kidneys and so much more. Still, the drummer has the rock-n-roll attitude — one of hope, humor and amazing will to fight!
Now, I said that to say this: Most Rockaholics are occasionally hit by headaches, sore throats, arthritic pains and other minor glitches. Sometimes, we end up complaining a bit. But, brothers and sisters, if Peter A. Dintino can go through his devastating leukemic battle and still have an optimistic outlook (when he’s awake), who are we to complain about the “little” things?
So, as you move and groove through your everyday doings, remember PETER DINTINO — say a quick prayer for him, and be thankful for the ATTITUDE OF ROCK-N-ROLL! It may not heal your body, but your outlook will be unconquerable!

READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Sure, it’s an old line — but, what with this Internet thing taking the place of well-worn pages, isn’t it time we got back to it?

Resolving Ike (and other tidbits)

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

IN THE NEWS:
The Senate in the Mississippi state capitol’s been debating whether to honor Ike Turner with a resolution. Turner, who was born in Clarksdale died last December of a cocaine overdose and had been accused by his ex-wife Tina, of abusing her. In the end, the Senate adopted an amended resolution praising Ike’s “musical contributions”, not the man himself.

Janet Jackson — she of times with the Jackson Five, Good Times with Jimmy Walker and really good times at the Superbowl halftime a coupla years back — is getting married to record producer Jermaine Dupri later this year. (all right … altogether now: Sooooooooo??)

PJ Proby, the rocker/balladeer from Texas who’s a bigger hit across the Atlantic than here in America, has a couple of items here: First, he’s been arrested for fraud! It seems he’s been drawing a pension while working his vocal cords in gigs all over the UK! That’s illegal, natch … but his lawyers are working on gettin’ the charges dropped.
And he’s stopped working his famous “pants-splitting” gimmick into his acts … on orders of a British court! Seems that some of his fans feel like they’re getting “ripped” off when he’s cut shows “short” with the routine. The female audience no longer “pants” with excitement when they see the 60+ year old coming apart at the seams. “Bottom” line, it’s considered an indecent act by the courts.

WHEN YA NEED A FAUCET …

Who do ya turn to when you need a new faucet? For that matter, what do you know about buying them? Well, The Relic’s found a site that’ll give ya the help you need in finding the right one!
Y’see, the folks at Faucet.com not only has a buying guide you can refer to, but will also recommend different types … and then lead you to the ones that are just right for your kitchen or bathroom!
But they do a lot more than that! They also offer pot filler and bar faucets — and the famous water-filtration faucets for the health-conscious! And, if you sign up for their “email alerts”, you even get a free $10 coupon you can use on their merchandise!
And what “merchandise” it is! Tell ya what … just click on this link to take you to the best spot for beautiful and sturdy kitchen faucetsFaucets.com!

The Barbarian Input … and Pete

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Rockers, I’ll be bringin’ more 411 on the Ron Ryan story (including some links to his music, past and present, with his permission, and his tour with Willie Nelson) soon.  But (huh?? Oh, I’ll get to the Barbarians pic in a minute; you’ll see how it all fits in. Just hang on …), first, I wanna update ya on rocker extraordinaire, Peter Dentino:

Latest word is that Pete’s havin’ more challenges to face; his
health’s failing though he’s had the treatments (bone marrow
and stem celltransplants).  I’m sure you’ll join the Relic, Ron and his many friends and fans in thought, prayer and well-wishes for him and that he pulls out of the slump and finally hits a home-run, able to “tag all the bases” and come back to “home plate” soon (okay … so I miss baseball!).  The battle against leukemia is a hard one, but this drummer can beat it if anyone can!  Just remember the name “Peter Dentino” in yer prayers and thoughts everytime you’re into them, okay?  And thanks … from all of us (and, I’m sure, Peter himself)!

There was another drummer, years ago, who had an obstacle to face … yet went on to become a true legend of the rock genre.  At the age of fourteen, young Victor Moulton lost part of his right arm in an explosion.  Now, for most of us, that’d be enough to put us on the “disabled” list and give it all up …

but not with this youngster!  Victor (whose name described his attitude, it seemed) learned to play the drums and, in 1964, became part of a rock group called The Barbarians — using his nickname, “Moulty”.

As time progressed (and gigs in the famous TAMI shows), he and the group would build a fantastic following.  Though he had a few people who would taunt him due to the “hook” he used in order to drum (and, as I remember from the first times I heard them play then, seemingly fitting the group’s name and attire), he became an inspiration to thousands of fans.  In 1966, following the release of the autobiographical song, “Moulty”, kids — sometimes with tears in their eyes — would come up and thank him for the “never-give-up” message of the song; it renewed the hope of those who were disabled in some way, built the morale of those who were ridiculed — even helped save a few who were even contemplating suicide!

And not many artists can claim to have such an impact!

Now, I said that to say this:  Among us who are of the rock genre, there are many who have overcome physical harm to persevere.  Some have had more of a challenge than others.  Some, like Mike Smith (formerly of the Dave Clark Five), may never be onstage again; others, like Peter Dentino, are struggling for life as-we-speak.

But, when I say “persevere”, I’m talkin’ about attitude.  And, brothers and sisters, when you’ve got the rock-n-roll “attitude”, nothing’s gonna stop you.  Sure, you may never play again. But your attitude is gonna be one that’ll touch hearts and spirits of thousands around the globe … ’cause the music … the raw energy of it all … is in you and reaches out to affect the masses!

Today, Victor ”Moulty” Moulton is alive and well … and in just a few clicks, the Relic’s gonna have
the honor of interviewing him for ya!  So stay tuned …

SUITS YA TO A TEE

And, while you’re at it, remember:  Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music (as well as with Peter) … and I’ll see ya on the flip side, with more on Ron Ryan, more updates, and the special interview with Moulty …

Ron Ryan’s Regal Request

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Over the past few posts (and with the help of Ron and his website), I’ve chronicled a man whose career has not only perked up a lot of musical ears, but made a tremendous mark on the British Invasion.  More specifically, he wrote the songs that put the Dave Clark Five over the top here in America.
Just a real quick rundown of a few of his contributions (consider this a short “refresher” course):

He penned hits like Bits & Pieces, Because and Anyway You Want It for the DC5 — while being shafted out of any royalties or credits by Clark himself.
He also introduced a young Mitch Mitchell to the world of professional musicianship by adding the drummer to his London-based band, The Riot Squad.  Though Mitchell went on to greater fame as the drummer of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he spent his time trying to oust Ron from his own group rather than thank him!

Now, the fact that Ron has also been involved deeply in his one of his favorite genres, country music, paves the way for a very interesting (actually, I think amazing would be a better word!) story:

Years ago, Ron had a gig at the famous Dorchester Hotel in London, with a country band.  As he entered the hall, he was informed that a lady wanted to speak with him personally.  Perhaps feeling a bit flattered-but-slightly-confused, he was led to a room where the “lady” had her back to him (I would imagine talking with someone else momentarily).  When she turned around to address him, Ron found he was face-to-face with …

Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth!

Since the affair at which the band was to play was a private party, as such, and the Queen expected to have a waltz during the dancing phase of it, she asked Ron if the band could play such music to accommodate.  Needless to say, the group was a bit dumbfounded as to do a classy number; after all, they were country! Still, since this was a special request by a wonderful lady, they agreed; and as the band began to play for the dance, Ron took the microphone and introduced the song as being for this special person. As they began, and saw Her Majesty beginning to dance, their jaws must’ve dropped a mile or two …

This lady … who happened to be the leader of one of the most historic, beautiful and creative nations on earth … was dancing to her favorite music, thanks to Ron and his willingness to accommodate.  It must’ve been a (if not the) high spot in his career thus far …

Bringing it up to the present for a moment: I’ve just received a copy of Ron’s new song, Make Your Stand.  With his permission, I’d like to be able to share that with you within a coupla clicks.  Trust me, you’ll be completely inspired by this stirring number.

There’s no doubt that Ron Ryan is still an integral part of this world we call “music”.  More and more people are beginning to sit up and take notice of the talent (both in songwriting and musical) of this amazing man … and it’s just a matter of time before we begin seeing Ron Ryan’s songs on the charts again — this time, with proper credit!

NEXT UP:  Ron … on the road with a young American chap named … Willie Nelson!

THE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN’

As many already know, The Relic’s a big fan of the “Pat-and-Mike routine” (ie, walking), and puts in about 10 miles a day on his gunboats.
Naturally, that means the need for new boots every so-often, and, when I go shopping, I only want the best for my ten piggies.
Y’know what?? I found ‘em, courtesy a place called The Clausette&#0174. Their EMU boots are sturdy, unique (you’ve gotta check out the Silver Star Boot — tattooed with skulls, crossbones, butterflies, angel wings on a red heart and others courtesy the screen-printed art of Playboy’s former Miss Febrary, Charis B! Beautiful!!) and extremely well-priced! Their lining, whether with sheepskin or Emu’s own MICRON 20 100% Merino wool lining (the “real deal” — not a mix!) make these boots ones that others have tried to (ahem!) EMUlate, but, friends, you just can’t outdo The Clausette&#0174 in quality and standard!
They not only have adult boots, though; when you click on their link (I’ll give it to ya in a moment), you’ll also be able to check out their great line of kids’ boots as well (and, I’ll tell ya this: Your little Johnny or Jenny’s gonna love ‘em!). And they have accessories, cleaners … and accept secure payment types (including PayPal&#0174!).
So give your feet the pampering they deserve … and get some top-of-the-line>walking apparel … er, “to boot”! And all at wallet-friendly prices!
Just click on this Emu Australia link now … and walk easy from now on!

Okay … with the servers being a little shaky for the time being, I’ve gotta cut this one a bit short.  So, until next time, just remember:  Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music (and, also, with “Shadow”, Pete Dentino, as he recuperates from stem-cell and bone-marrow transplants)and I’ll see ya on the flip side …

A Quick NEWSBREAK …

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Okay … we’re gonna take a small break from the continuing story of Ron Ryan to bring you the latest news from RockRelic International:

  • MacMILLS BATTLE NEARS END: UK newspapers are reporting that the Sir Paul/Heather Mills battle is already settled, with her receiving about $108 million. She’ll get a lump payment of $40 million (tsk … I know it’s not much, but … she’ll find a way to survive …), and the rest of it’ll be paid (hey … nobody said I couldn’t add commentary!) in equal installments each year until daughter Beatrice turns 18. Now, Mills will get custody of their offspring, but Sir Paul will have equal visitation rights. He’s also setting up a $2 million trust fund for the child.

Oh, yeah — and Heather’s gotta keep quiet about both the proceedings and her divorce from Paul (hmph … good luck on that one!)
and, in an interview with John Gottman, psychologist with Washington University, Sir Paul appeared to be “terrified” of both Heather and bad publicity. Click that link up there to read more (it’s about halfway-down on the page).

One more MacItem: Sir Paul will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Brit Awards (the UK version of The Grammys) this Wednesday, Feb. 20. With all he’s been through, it’s time he got some good publicity …

  • ERIC BURDON DECLARES WAR! The former frontman for The Animals will be reuniting with the group WAR, with which he recorded two LPs in the past. In fact, it’s the first time in 37 years that they’ve played together. The gig’s gonna be on April 21 at Royal Albert Hall … and, yes, they are gonna distribute a DVD of the show.

  • THEY’RE NOT JIVE TALKIN’!
With the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame readying their show, the Playboy Hall of Fame has announced its newest inductee(s): The Bee Gees! The mag said that selecting Robin, (the late) Maurice and Barry was easy, since they’ve had a top ten hit in every decade since the Sixties!
  • THE LENNON LEMON: It seems that a young Nashville singer, Lennon Murphy, want exclusive nationwide use of the name “Lennon.” That hasn’t set well with Yoko Ono, who’s threatened a lawsuit to keep that from happening! She says that, though she has no problem with Ms. Murphy using her own name in performance, she doesn’t want John’s name exploited! Think whatcha want about Yoko — in this case, she has a solid point!
  • BABY, YOU CAN DRIVE HIS CAR: A man in Cardiff, Wales bought his wife a new Ferrari … one that belonged to Rod Stewart! The F430 Spider cost him around $235,000!
  • FROM “CUDDLY TOY” TO “EVIL ROBOT” Former Monkee Davy Jones will be singing the title song in the new movie Sexina Popstar, PI, about a young singer out to expose corruption in the music industry. TV’s favorite “Batman,” Adam West, plays an industry mogul who sends out a “boy band” (actually, evil robots) to destroy her. The movie premiered yesterday at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.

    and, finally …

  • SHOCK AND AWE No, that’s not the name for a potential Obama/Clinton ticket (well, maybe not …), but of the names that country superstar Dolly Parton’s given her … er, endowment(s)! She says they’re so famous, they’re like “public property” and says the duo (!) have caused her to postpone her upcoming U.S. tour due to back pain. “You try wagging these puppies around awhile and see if you don’t have back pain!” she says. Hundreds of her male fans have already written in, offering to carry them for her …or something to that effect …

Now, before I sign off for this special news update, let me ask you to keep your thoughts, hearts and prayers in motion for superstar Peter Dentino. He’s recuperating from a bone-marrow transplant and stem-cell introduction to combat leukemia … and, believe me, if the spirit of rock-n-roll lives, it does so very well in this humorous, friendly and knowledgeable drummer!
I’ll keep ya updated on his progress, okay?
