Exciting News from The Fore Front

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Man, I toldja and toldja to keep yer eyes on The Fore, ’cause they are gonna hit BIG!!

But didja listen?? Well, I hope so, ’cause they’ve just taken the next step up that ladder!

Yep … just got the email from one of their managers, David Jordan: The lads have just signed with NOMA Music!

Huh? Wha … whaddya mean “Who are they”?? They’re only the biggest provider of music and songs for the film and TV industry, that’s all!! So if ya hear the lads on a CSI or House episode, or in a blockbuster movie, you can thank NOMA for that. It means more airplay and exposure for the band here in the U S of A as well as worldwide! And, Rockiteers, they deserve it!!

QUICK NEWS UPDATES

Bobby Sherman (remember him? Heartthrob singer from the Sixties, now with the California Highway Patrol??) and Peter Frampton are just two of the celebs whose Hollywood Walk of Fame stars are gettin’ a reworkin’ (yep … construction and a lotta feet walkin’ over ‘em have kinda scuffed ‘em up a bit). The vodka people, Absolut, is pickin’ up the tab and — get this — will receive its own star as a sponsor (right … Absolut-ly! And to think it all came down on National Vodka Day No kiddin’! It was this past Thursday! Made for some strrrrange-tastin’ cakes, man ….

The lady that The Relic had a secret crush on way-back-in-the-day (hey … I was only eleven at the time!), Connie Francis, was taken to a hospital in Long Island last week with (her pubs’ words) “dangerously high blood pressure”. ‘Twas just before she was to share the stage that night with Neil Sedaka. Now, her people say she’s doing okay, but the docs wanted to keep her under observation ’til Saturday to be sure. (Rockiteers, listen — and yer Uncle Relic’s serious ’cause he considers you all friends as well as fans: If you’re no stranger to sky-high blood pressure, PLEASE get to yer local doctor and have it checked … mebbe get somethin’ to take for it … and take it faithfully! That’s one of the reasons I lost my bro recently! And my cousin. And my uncle. So do it, okay? ‘Nuff said!!)

UMMMM … WHAT?!? Seems like the defense for poor li’l ol’ Phil Spector can’t get it straight. Accordin’ to the news comin’ over the RelicWire, they wanna suppress any blood or autopsy findings and (now, get this!) “remove the possibility of Phil being convicted on anything less than first degree murder.” Ummm … did I read that right? They … they wanna remove anythin’ that won’t get him a “murder one” charge?? Sheesh … Philly, I’m not a personal fan of yours, but sounds to me like ya need to change lawyers!

RARE BEATLEFACTS FOUND!!

WOW!! Talk aboutcher luck! Found some olllllld notes I made about the Fab Four way back in 1979! Along with it (now, this is weird!) was a business receipt for some gas I got — at the time, I wuz drivin’ the public, stateside version of a Sherman Tank (aka straight-drive Plymouth Belvedere). The cost for the fill-up was just under (snif!) TEN DOLLARS!

Anyway, after drying my tears, I read the info:

Remember The Beatles’ tune, Not A Second Time? ‘Twas on their first American LP … and wasn’t really a “Beatles” song as such! The tune was actually recorded by John and Ringo, with George Martin sittin’ in on piano!

And then there was a report of the meeting between JPG&R and Elvis! Contrary to reports, he was still a bit skeptical about the “moptops”, although John considered him to be the one who really got teenagers into rock-n-roll! But, when they met, Presley and the lads jammed a bit, and Elvis tried to impress them by doin’ the lead-in to I Feel Fine. At that point, according to the report, John finally realized that Presley wasn’t an unreachable “rock god”, per se, but a normal human, like the rest of us.

I also wrote this: “John knew that the headhunters were out in droves, lookin’ for anything ’secret’, like ‘drug’ messages or ‘Paul Is Dead’ or whatever. So he intentionally set the words in some of the fades to weird phrases that could be played backwards and lead these yokels on a wild goose chase! Yep … I actually used the word yokel. Forgive me. I won’t do it again … here …

JIMMY PAGE … SKIFFLER??

You bet! And here he is, at the ripe old age of fourteen, as part of a skiffle group (now, they’re gonna be interviewin’ others in the band, so just bide yer time, yardbirds! It’s definitely a rare look-see!)

keep your eyes on the skies, yer feet on the ground, yer heart with the music …

and I’ll see ya on the flip side!

RockNews, Macca’s Big Finish and MORE …

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

First, just a quick word to remind ya that, after the rockrelic.com (ie, “other site’s”) gig is over (got about ten more days, more or less, whichever comes first), the new one’s gonna start at a different venue! I’ll give ya more 411 in the next few days, so be ready to gear up for the move!
Wait a minnit … I’ve just been informed that The Move won’t be performing. They’re stuck in traffic outside London …
Anyway, I’ve already heard from my RockCuzzins, Aunt Etta Shaim and Don Becrool that they’ll be there. But every Rockaholic/Rockiteer is welcome. In fact, let’s make it the
biggest oldies/classic-rock party on the web!
More on the worx as merrily we go along …

MACCA’s BIG FINISH

On Friday night (the one we just passed, I mean), the crowd at Shea Stadium went gonzo for Paul McCartney as he appeared at the legendary stadium’s last show. But the (okay, I’ll say it … but just this once!) ex-Beatle and Billy Joel gave the most fitting “closing” for the show with their dual rendition of Let It Be. A tremendous finis h befitting a truly legendary site!

Some missed most of it, because they were waiting in line for the last of the great chili dogs. (Unfortunately, they weren’t scheduled to appear …*)

(oh, alright: *I meant the famed eats at the Mets’ baseball games!)

A FEW ODDS AND ENDS …

Hey … stateside boomers: Remember Dobie Gillis? He and his beatnik partner, Maynard G. Krebs (the late Bob Denver, played by “Willy” Gilligan), ruled the airwaves in the late Fifties.
Well, ya wanna feel old? Dobie (Dwayne Hickman) turned 74 in May!! Yep … he was playin’ the crewcut teen at 25! (btw: The “G.” in “Maynard G. Krebs” stood for … Walter (his aunt’s name! No, I am not making that up, either!

The Captain and Tennille usedta sing that Love Will Keep Us Together (hmph … and here I was, thinkin’ it was skin and muscle tissue! Silly me …). But didja know that Daryl Dragon got his nickname from Mike Love when he (Daryl) played with the Beach Boys? Or that Toni Tennille sang backup on Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me and Pink Floyd’s The Wall? They’re celebrating 33 years together as a married couple (she’s two years older than th’ Captain).

On the heels of a rumour that Mark Lindsay is returning to Paul Revere and the Raiders (it’s not true, though he and Paul are still best of friends) comes the fact that their last hit, Indian Reservation (or Lament of the Cherokee Nation), wasn’t a Raiders hit after all! The song (a cover of Don Fardon’s #3 UK hit) was actually done by Mark himself (with the help of session musicians). He just included The Raiders name out of respect for Revere.

A SOUND SLEEP

As all of us who’ve raised kids can tell you, it’s important to have the best bedding and surroundings for your little one to bed down at night (or afternoon, or naptime). For them, it’s vital to growth and health; for you, it’s vital for a bit of “peace and quiet”. Besides, there’s nothing prettier than a happily-sleeping child, right?
But let’s get back to the bedding:
After completing your newborn’s nursery, you want to be sure the bedding is comfortable, spacious, easily accessible and has all the “extras”: bumper pads, fitted crib sheets and more. After all, you’re introducing a new and precious being into the world, and want the best for him or her!
Often, new parents are a bit intimidated by prices and lack of selection when they go out to shop for their newborn’s bedding. But, if you click on the link I’m about to give, you’ll find great prices, wide selection and great articles and advice to help you make the right choice!
Face it … no other store on the market can offer all that … and more! Just click on this link for the best in baby bedding, and see for yourself!

Well, that’s all for now, but tune in Monday evening for more! Until then, remember:
Keep your nose in the wind, your feet on the ground (remembering to right yerself up if your nose runs and feet smell), your eyes on the skies and heart with the music …

and I’ll see ya on the flip side.

Macca at Shea, The Fore, News and Vids

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

“Old Shea, could you see/by the kleig’s burly lights/what so proudly we hailed/as two legends were teaming?”
Okay … not exactly the National Anthem, but Friday night, New York did have a star-spangled banner of greats onstage.
Yep … it was a bittersweet night at Shea Stadium as Billy Joel headlined a card that knocked the socks off the over 55 grand in attendance (even those who weren’t wearing socks were pleased!). Ya had the “Piano Man” (though my fave is The Entertainer), the legendary Tony Bennett, John Mellencamp, Roger Daltrey (incidentally, Billy broke his guitar onstage at the end of Roger’s song), Steven Tyler, some country singer named Garth Brooks, and, to close the very last show at the famed stadium:
PAUL McCARTNEY!
Now, I said bittersweet. Actually, there’s a new stadium goin’ up next door (the old one? Gonna put up a parking lot [do I hear Joni Mitchell in the background somewhere??). That’s good. The old one has so many cool memories that it’s gonna be a bummer to see it go. That’s bad. But the performers onstage are still the best of classics (both rock and pop), and gave 100%+ to the crowd. That was sheer dynamite! The most poignant moment was when Macca and Joel joined forces on Let It Be.

Now, in case ya missed Paul’s appearance, here’s a vid of it (dunno how long it’s gonna be on YouTube, but, hey … I’m kinda “limited edition” here myself!). Oh … and you’ll see Macca only on the giant screens they had (since this was taped by a fan), and hear a the crowd singin’ along with him on …

NEWS FROM THE FORE-FRONT

Natch, the best news is that Luker is on the mend! His amazing vocals, drivin’ rhythm guitar and stage presence has been missed tremendously, and he’ll be back with the lads very soon! Until then, you can catch up with all the band’s news by clickin’ on their newly-redesigned site! You ForeHeads will really dig the way it looks!
Of course, when The Relic announces his new home (y’see, the other RelicSite’s in its final month), you’re gonna see and hear The Fore there every week, among many other goodies!! So gear up … we’re gettin’ ready to move it in about 11 days!! Got a special contest planned for the openin’ where you can win a cool prize … so stay tuned (UNH-unh! I ain’t-a gonna tell ya yet. See, I’m still writin’ here until the end of the month, and, dude, I’m devoted!).

MORE ROCK NEWS

SPEAKIN’ OF STEVEN TYLER Condolences to him and his family on the loss of his mum, Susan Ray Tallerico on Monday (the 14th). She was 84.

AND THE WINNER IS … Wouldja believe Pat Boone? Yeah … the Parents Television Council gave him its Integrity In Entertainment award this past Monday! They said it was for his “uplifting, enlightening, educational and wholesome media messages.” Boone said, “I never made a movie or recorded a song that I didn’t want my kids and grandkids to hear or see.” (ummm … who else is left, Patrick? When ya dissed Little Richard by coverin’ his songs so “white” teens wouldn’t have to listen to him, ya lost our audience. Then ya practically killed yer career by makin’ that silly “heavy-metal” album. I mean, you’re a nice guy and all, but … geez …)

Here are Don and Phil with the “Pea-Picker” himself, Tennessee Ernie Ford. See how all three of ‘em handle playin’ one guitar on …

THE NEED FOR HDMI

If you’re into any type of music, videos or other programs, you know the need for good HDMI cables, right? (Now, for those who aren’t familiar with the initials: HDMI is short for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and provides the link between any audio/video source like DVD players, audio and/or video monitors - like for digital television - and does it all over a single cable).
You also know how vital it’s going to be, especially with the national switchover to digital TV that’s comin’ up early next year!
Now, as important as these interfaces are, you still want to make sure you have the best for your entertainment needs — and yet not “break the bank” when ya buy them!
And there’s only one place I know of that’ll fulfill both these needs and provide you with the best in HDMI products (and, listen … there’s more! Just click the link and find out!!). Believe me, it’s not only necessary to have these interfaces; it’s also practical! So click on that link now and enjoy the best in music, video and more — the right way!!

Well, that’s all the time we have for this installment. Until a little later, then … or earlier … remember:
Keep your nose in the wind, your eyes on the skies, your heart with the music …

and I WILL see ya on the flip side …

Flyin’ at the Flamingo

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Over the past coupla issues, we talked a bit about The Cavern Club in Liverpool … but, over on London’s Wardor Street, there was a club that was equally exciting, especially to R&B buffs.

The Flamingo Club, or “Old Mingo” (as some of the regulars called it), actually was run out of a dingy basement in the late’50s and early ’60s and featured some of the best talent of the era. It also proved to be a gigantic “melting pot” where people of any race could come in and have a great time!

As writer Mick Hall so aptly described it, “On entering you were hit by a wall of cheap perfume and roll-on deodorant, smoke, sweat and dancing bodies, all accompanied by a throbbing R&B soundtrack. As you pushed your way to the front there were three rows of old cinema seats in front of which there was a small stage for the band to perform on, with Hammond Organ, drums and amplifiers set up. To the left on a raised platform, there was a coffee bar type area from where you could oversee the stage and the rest of the club, a foot or so below and from which you could view the band and check out the girls dancing before you [attempted to] make a move.”

Ron Ryan was one of the many greats who performed there, along with Georgie Fame, Zoot Money and the Big Roll Band, John Lee Hooker, Chris Farlowe, Long John Baldry, and many, many more. It was the ‘in Club’ in London, and GIs stationed at US Air Force Bases in England made a beeline to it! While originally called a Jazz Club, it soon turned to blues greats like Alexis Korner (undoubtedly, the “Father of UK Blues”), who influenced people like ‘The Stones’ Ronnie Wood,Eric Clapton, and many others.

WHICH DIET PILL IS RIGHT?

For people who are really serious about losing weight, this is the big question! There are so many on the market these days, and you really can’t tell which is the most effective — especially in your case!
Now, you can go by a friend’s recommendation, or what you might hear on TV ads, but there’s no guarantee the brand’s right for you!
But there’s one site where you can find the five best diet pills (both men’s and women’s!) on the market; where you can compare them as far as their claims, their effectiveness … and their prices (they’ll even show you where you can get the lowest prices!); fat burner reviews and even consumer reviews!
So, make a wise choice if you’re going to buy diet pills and go to the folks who’ll lead you to the right ones! They’re just a click of the link you just saw. Do it now!

Rock News, Vids and a Quick Tour

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

INTERESTING “JULY” FACTS: Didja know that, 48 years ago this comin’ Friday, Roy Orbison had his first hit, thanks, in part, to the Everly Brothers … and Elvis? Y’see, they turned down a song called Only The Lonely, so he recorded it! It proved to be a good move, ’cause, over the next six years, he charted twenty-two times with top 40 hits!

And, with a lotta talk about The Who tribute comin’ to VH1 on Thursday, it’s interesting to note that they had their first full-scale U. S. tour forty-one years ago this July 14. They opened for Herman’s Hermits on this one.

July 14, 1973, also marked a sad event in rock history: the Everly Brothers’ concert at Knott’s Berry Farm where Phil smashed his guitar and walked offstage. It’d be the last time the brothers would perform together for over a decade. Y’see, the show was stopped by the entertainment director (Bill Hollingshead) ’cause he felt Don was screwing up the show. At that point, Phil broke his guitar and left Don to do the rest of the show by himself. They wouldn’t gig together again ’til September, 1983.

FOR YOU WHO’VE ASKED (and “why,” I’ll never know … but thanx)

It’s a quick tour of m’hometown of Charlotte, N. C., U.S.A. from back-in-the-day (at least now you’ll know who’s to blame for this mess!). Be back in a minute, myself:
QUICK TOUR OF CHARLOTTE, NC (circa 1986)

CONGRATS TO SIR GEORGE MARTIN …

George Martin (yes, the Beatles’ producer!) was honored with a career award from the Grammy Foundation in L. A. this past Saturday! They called him “the most successful producer of all time”, since he’s been responsible over fifty #1 hits and his productions have sold over (ready?) one billion copies. The widows of George Harrison and John Lennon (Olivia and Yoko, respectively) were on hand, and Jeff Beck and Tom Jones. It’s an honor well deserved!

NOW … IN HONOR OF THE WHO:

Since Pete, Roger, Keith and John are to be honoured this week on VH1 … and because this week also marks the 41st anniversary of their first big gig in America, I’m showin’ My Generation (the one with the big explosion at the end!).
MY GENERATION (apparently from Smothers Brothers TV Show)

BORN TO RIDE?

If that’s the case, you’ll wanna check out the best place for great, pre-owned Harleys (now, seriously … is there any other bike?).
When you click on the link I’m about to give you, you’re gonna find everything Harley-Davidson! Sure, they have the “sales” and “service” departments, but wait’ll you see what else is here: Financing and Insurance, Racing, the “Rally in Raleigh”, Merchandise … even Learn To Ride! It’s totally awesome!!
And, of course, there’s a lot more, and all you have to do to find it is to click on the link that’ll take you to the best used Harleys in the nation!
So get yer motor runnin’ and head on over there now!

MORE ON THE FORE IN THE NEXT ISH!! SO STAY TUNED!! Right now, I’ve gotta get the cats bedded down (except 20+-pound K-Cat. He can sleep anywhere he wants …) and catch (huh?? Well, you try to move ‘im! It’s like tipping a cow!) a few zzzzz’s (for you city folks: it’s a country expression) because it’s time for (or whatcha do after eating a big meal with a mean-lookin’, fat waitress lookin’ impatiently over yer shoulder!) me to get some shut-eye.
Meaning …
Keep your eyes on the skies, your nose in the wind, your heart with the music (and Luker, who’s still waitin’ results …)

and I’ll see ya on the flip side!!

Of Caverns and Covers … (Vids and Tunes)

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

Who in their right mind hasn’t heard of the Mathew Street madness in Liverpool? On one side, you’ve got Lennon’s Bar, and, on the other, the famously-rebuilt Cavern Club.

In fact, it’s just beside where the old one — where The Beatles, Searchers, Big Three and many other top bands cut their musical teeth — stood (Spencer Hannabuss, bass player/vocalist/songwriter for The Fore, says he’s heard there’s a door in the ladies’ room of the new one that you can go through and see the original Cavern).

The Club — extremely popular as always (partly due to the music, partly due to legacy) — is still the place to go if acts wanna be noticed!

Now, we’ve all heard about JPG&R and their conquest of both Cavern and, in due time, the world. But there were unsung (pardon the pun) heroes of UK rock whose presence at The Club was just as exciting and boisterous.<
For example, Faron’s Flamingos were a tremendous hit for three reasons: bassist “Faron” Ruffley’s wild jumps and dynamic voice, drummer Trevor Morais’ crazy “back-flip” during the set, and, of course, some of the most rockin’ music of the time.

Here, in this vid, you’ll not only experience FF for yourself but get a bit of a feel for the old Cavern:
FARON’S FLAMINGOS AT THE ORIGINAL CAVERN

The other was a trio called The Big Three. Not only could they rock, but they really knew how to work a crowd! They also had a tie-in with Faron (see above), as he and Paddy Chambers (guitarist) joined the Big Three in 1963, when Johnny Gustafson (bass) and Brian Griffiths (drums) left.

But here are the originals, doing Reelin’ and Rockin’, straight from the Cavern Club!

Of course, R&R was originally one of Chuck Berry’s hits, and it brings us to the subject of cover songs. Natch, in Liverpool, sailors would bring American 45s back to port, and many of the skiffle groups would take the songs and more-or-less adopt them. When they switched over to electrics and drumkits, they would use these songs as part of their earliest sets.
For example, The Paramounts would be known for the Leiber/Stoller (or Coasters’ ) hit, Poison Ivy. Later, this group would disband and, years later, re-form with original members as Procol Harum.

Another band specialized in Everly Brothers’ covers — and some say that The Del Renas were thisclose to the Brothers’ amazing harmonies! One of their finest works was this one: WHen Will I Be Loved? Though you can hear some differences, pay close attention to the vocal hooks and solo verses (Derek Green’s spot-on as a Don Everly soundalike!). By the way, these guys are also the ones who’ve been credited as introducing the first organ to UK rock bands!

Today, as we know, The Cavern Club is still the place to go for mood and music throughout the Merseyside and beyond! One of the best shows of recent was done by The Fore during the Liverpool IPO Festival. Here they are, doing one of their fab hits:
THE FORE — LIVE AT THE CAVERN (LIVERPOOL IPO FESTIVAL 2008)

KEEP ON SENDIN’ YER THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR LUKER!

I spoke with Fore rhythm-guitarist Luke Bentley by phone yesterday and, while the blood tests have come back negative (meaning everythin’s alright in that respect), there are still more tests to run until the docs find out what’s got him down physically! So just hold yer cursor where it is right now, stop and say a quick prayer for or send a good vibration to the lad, okay?? He told me that he appreciates each one of them, and all his fans who’ve shown their support!
You can send a “get-well” email just by clicking here or here.
C’mon, Rockiteers … let’s lift the Luker’s spirits a bit! Do it TODAY!

A FUN WAY TO EXERCISE

With so much emphasis being put on proper weight and healthy hearts these days, it’s pretty much a “given” that we all need to take great care of our bodies as well!
Now, there are a lot of folks who say love to exercise, but they can’t afford the time to go to the YMCA or local gym to work out. If they could only do it at their own speed, in their own home, it’d be easier …

That’s where ellipticals come to the rescue! Not only can you have a great muscular and cardio workout with these stationary exercise machines — and in the comfort of your own home – but you can save money and purchase securely in the process, find special offers and even get help with your purchase … and all by clicking the link that’ll take you to the best of ellipticals.

Now, with that being said, I’m gonna take a a tiny little break and be back witcha shortly. Until then, remember:

Keep yer eyes on the skies, yer feet on the ground, yer heart with the music …
and remember … if yer feet smell and yer nose runs, yer upside down!

I’ll see ya on the flip side.

THE SPECTRE OF SPECTOR

Seems like, no matter where the physically-androgenous Phil Spector is, he attracts trouble! Now, while waiting on his second murder trial to commence, some of his former clients have filed a joint lawsuit against him, saying he hasn’t paid them the royalties they’re due twice yearly. Members of the Ronettes, Crystals and Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans are some of the plaintiffs in the issue!

And one of the greatest ’70s white-soul fronters has left us. Remember the Climax Blues Band’s Couldn’t Get It Right from back in ‘77? Well, Colin Cooper, CBB’s lead singer, passed away in Stafford, England, of cancer. He was 68. The Relic sends condolences to his family and fans worldwide.

A BIT MORE OF FRY & LAURIE

As most of ya know by now, THE FORE’S amazing rhythm guitarist and vocalist, Luke Bentley, is in the hospital while doctors are investigating the mysterious malady that’s waylaid the lad!

As you can imagine, this has not only perplexed doctors and family alike, but also has caused Luker to become a bit anxious (he wants to get back onstage with the band!) and sad at the same time.

Look … he needs our support, troops! So you can email him c/o The Fore or — and as a bonus (and this would mean worlds to him!) — if you live in the UK, you can call and speak directly to Luke in his hospital room! His number’s 07041 14 8157 (in the states, just add the international code. Check yer phone directory if ya don’t know, or call directory assistance).

Bubblegum Music … and More

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

From a coupla years after The Beatles left the charts for good to just after the disco years, there was a new “style” that was heavily-promoted — and took early-teen America briefly by storm.

The Bay City RollersHere’s what happened: by early ‘74, some industry moguls began seeing anything disco, psychedelic or metallic as unappealing to the massive fan-base of Sixties groups like The Beatles, Searchers, Dave Clark Five, etc.

Y’see, as rock music began to change, they realized that fan-base (and the money it brought back then) was too immense to neglect; so they searched out bands and acts that would create a pseudo-early-Sixties sound (and, in some cases [like Fruitgum, The Flying Machine, White Plains and the earliest Monkees], created ‘em in the studio). Then they gave ‘em a decent contract (can ya say Arista? I thought ya could!) and put ‘em on the road. And, for the years between 1974 and 1980, it seemed to satisfy the masses. And, since youngsters like bubble gum so much, reviewers christened the music “Bubblegum”.

Alas, many of these (like actual bubblegum) didn’t “stick” and became “stale” after awhile. But a question from the RelicMail asks: What was the diffrence (sic) between what they call bubblegum and Beatle type rock?

Okay … first, check what The Relic wrote in the paragraph before the question Herb asked.

As far as reasons why they didn’t stick around long: Well, the early UK Invasion bands had a strong attack to their songs; they let you know, from the first note, they were there and they meant business! Many of the b’gum era didn’t have that … instead, they just melted into the song itself.

Secondly: most of the b’gum bands didn’t have the background their predecessors had. They (the ’60s UK bands) hadta learn on hard-to-play instruments that were inferior to the ones of the US (with strings so far from the fingerboard their fingers would bleed from pressing them into chords!), and they had to play even the toughest dives (which often made their sounds so loud and raucous!) in order to gain a bit of name recognition and, maybe, some pay! Of course, the b’gummers weren’t born during the hardest times (like the Nazi bombings of London, etc.). Since the war was over before they saw their first light, they pretty much had an easier life growin’ up.

Another point: Unlike early bands from Liverpool (who had little to go on but rock and R&B records coming in portside from the states) and London (who fashioned their own brand of rhythm-and-blues), who mostly paid their dues as skiffle groups, the b’gummers had a wealth of songs to inspire them … mostly from the bands who made it big in the Invasion.

Now, all that doesn’t mean they weren’t fun to listen or dance to, but … well, lemme ask ya: Have ya heard The Searchers lately? (They are FAB!!) Gerry and the Pacemakers? Troggs? Now … have ya heard 1910 Fruitgum Company’s latest? Or Andy Kim?

Y’see, our generation had staying power … and forever will have it!

THE FORE HAS THE SAME “STAYING POWER”

Here’s why: The lads have all paid their dues on streetsides, clubs, Caverns and such. They built their sound from the ground up! Nothing’s been handed to them on a silver plate, either! They really work at their music! And their staying power is gonna be immense!!

While I’m at it, lemme put in one more plug for mate LUKE BENTLEY. Luker’s headin’ to the hospital today (Tuesday) for more tests, and could REALLY use yer prayers and well-wishes! Just send YOURS to this address and I know the band will get the wishes to him!

Last night, Spencer, Matt and Si played without their comrade, but still put on a dynamite show! Still, Luker’s solid rhythm and humorous persona was definitely missed! TO LUKER: You’ll come through this like a CHAMPION, mate! The Relic and thousands of Relicateers are behind ya, my friend! Just remember … GET SOME REST!

RINGO LOSES HIS HOME

Unfortunately, even the Heritage Foundation couldn’t stop the Liverpool council’s call to raze the superstar’s childhood home in Liverpool! But, in an ironic twist, they were able to save Pete Best’s birthplace! (Natch, John, Paul and George’s places have already been saved!)

Who said life was fair??

MAKIN’ THE BEACH YOUR HOME …

Y’know, being a Carolinian has its advantages, and one of ‘em has been to visit and enjoy the wonder of NC’s shoreline! From Carolina Beach to Topsail, Kure and Atlantic Beaches (as well as the gorgeous Bald Head Island!), there are wonderfully scenic and beautiful places to live and thrive in!

Of course, if you want to move to that beauty (and who wouldn’t?), you’re undoubtedly concerned about cost, size, proximity and much more. Well, there’s one site that’ll work with you through all those, and get you the very best deal on what you want — and where you want it!

Now, by clicking the link you’re about to see, you’ll find some of the friendliest, helpful folks in the trade — and they’ll be with you every step-of-the way; from your first discussion with ‘em to the moment you relax in that rockin’ (or lawn) chair on your front porch, slowly sippin’ your iced tea and kickin’ back to enjoy the sweet breeze of the sea!
And all you’ve gotta do is click here to find the very best in Wilmington real estate.
With warmer weather and a hankerin’ to get out and really enjoy life, why not give ‘em a visit today?

Okay … that’s it for this edition. Tune in tomorrow, same batty-time, same batty-station! And, until then, remember:

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music (and with Luke!)

and I’ll see ya on the flip side!

Why The Music Wuz/Iz FAB!!

Published by therockrelic under Uncategorized Edit This

WHY THE MUSIC WUZ FAB (& STILL IZ!)

A simple question posed to me over the weekend:

“Why wuz the beatles and british and now fore so poplar?”

Well, besides winnin’ our special prize of a 2008 Merriam-Webster&#0169 Dictionary (and please use it!), you’ve asked a ? that’s popped up pretty often in the RelicMail. And the answer’s simpler than the question.

But, first, how ’bout we get it straight and callin’ ‘em what they so proudly are? (Hey … I’ve been just as guilty as you in this): Whether Beatles, Fore, Yardbirds (capital “Y”), Ron, Jane or whoever: they’re English! From the mighty musical mothercountry of ‘Merica! To say Britain includes Scotland, Ireland, Wales, etc.

Let’s give the mates their proper due, okay??

Now … on to the answer (huh?? No, I didn’t yell!!):

The bands and acts of the Sixties — especially those in ENGLAND — didn’t have internet, ipods, iphones, idunnos, youtubes or youfoolins to get their music out! They had to work hard at it. No synths, no computerized backing loops, either: Just old, hard-to-fret guitars and a determination to be heard … even if it meant shouting the music over a wild crowd!
From streetsides to rowdy pubs, clubs and dance halls, they played wherever they could find an audience! Meanwhile, they’d beat the streets to find record labels that’d be interested in their demos (recorded, then, in a studio. There were no portable computers to burn CDs on back then!).
Y’see, today’s acts have it almost too easy … and that’s why most of ‘em don’t have the staying power of the Invasion forces!

Now, The Fore is the exception … because they’re gettin’ their music out the same way as their forefathers; They’re really workin’ at it! And, Rockiteers, it’s definitely paying off; their fan base is growing every day, and their music is compared only to the Beatles in excitement! They definitely deserve the fame they’re gettin’!!

Anyway, I’ll continue this in the next post, since I’ve a few other things to cover (and we’ll also replay some of what superstar Ron Ryan had to say about it. He’s still writing fantastic songs, and, believe me, he knows what it was like; he was there in the trenches!)… so stay tuned …

RINGO — THE ARTIST?

Yep … and he’s sellin’ it off! Forty pieces he created while on tour around ten years ago, in fact. Now, he’s lookin’ for almost three grand, and put ‘em up for sale this past Friday! Sounds a little steep? Hey … it’s Ringo we’re talkin’ about here … and, besides, it includes a ticket to Ringo’s July 3 show in Florida. The money won’t go into his pocket, though; it’ll benefit the Lotus Foundation, a charity aimed at advancing social welfare.

BE-BOP-A-LULA, SHE’S MY …

Awww, you know the rest of the song, right? The late Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps (which, incidentally, were named after President Dwight Eisenhower’s favorite golf cap) were pioneers in melding solo pop/rock and the band format. Also a favorite of many rockaholics, rockiteers, rockers and even some of us who are off our rockers! Anyway, here’s their first appearance, at the Town Hall Party, circa 1958):

WHATCHA GONNA DO …

… when the power goes out?? Lately, we’ve had quite a few serious storms here in the states, and, believe me, nothing’s worse than having to stumble around in the dark, looking for a flashlight with dead batteries, stumping your toes and knocking over things while your refrigerated food begins to warm up and go bad.
But there is a sensible solution! Y’see, a good, portable or standby generator can keep your lights goin’, your food cold, or whatever ya need in the way of power until the electric company fixes things!
Now, at the link I’m about to give ya, you’ll not only find the best on the market (and at fantastic prices!), but accessories, buying guides and a whole lot more!
Look … it only makes sense for you and, most importantly, your family! You can’t go wrong with the brands, either — the advice — or the prices! It’s a need these days, believe me (I already have one, and wouldn’t do without it!). Just go to the site that has the best insurance against darkness you’ll ever need: the best in generators … and begin to see the light again!

Well, with that, I’m gonna have to interrupt this edition … another storm’s brewin’ outside, and I don’t particularly like being Chuck Roast … so, until a bit later today just remember:

Keep your nose in the wind, your eyes on the skies, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side.
