The First Song of ‘71 …

FIRST UP: Before we head into the uncharted waters of this post (and in response to all you who’ve asked), let me remind you that you can hear (in fact, download!) THE FORE’s interview on Express FM just by clickin’ that link you just passed!
It’s short, info-packed and a lot of fun.

When 1970 was just finishing up, this bald bird was saying “sayonara” to the U. S. Army (don’t worry … it was honorable!).

Richard Nixon still owned the White House, and Elvis had just started his big “comeback” gigs in Vegas. The Beatles were all but history, psychedelics were starting to lose their steam, and many acts at the time were blending both worlds — with a generous helping of soul mixed in.

While at my last duty station (Ft. Polk, Louisiana), the two biggest LPs were the soundtrack of Woodstock and that of a band called Led Zeppelin.
But my first intro to the Seventies rock as a new civilian was by a band calling itself Bloodrock. And the track I heard still sticks in my mind as the most macabre song of classic rock:

D. O. A.

The tune was an eerie, highly descriptive account of a plane or auto crash (no one knows for sure, and the band stopped performing the song shortly after new vocalist Warren Ham joined the band in 1972. They changed format during that time and began playing progressive rock, pop and jazz).

HONORING THE FAB FOUR

Today, 10 July, is officially Beatles Day in Liverpool; the 24-hour period where they honor John, Paul, George and Ringo as “hometown heroes” responsible for the rock revolution that made rock what it is today.

THE FORE will be playing at Liverpool’s Chavasse Park, right in the middle of Liverpool’s award winning development ‘Liverpool One’ — in the heart of the town center! They’ll take the stage at 1.30pm … the only band during the Day that won’t be covering Beatles’ songs or be a tribute band. Their songs, while invoking the spirits of the Fab Four, are all self-composed and are spot-on in bringing the Mersey/Hamburg sounds to today’s rock generation!

MISSING: ONE SUBMARINE

Have you seen the five-foot tall Yellow Submarine that was hanging on the front of Liverpool’s Beatles Story museum last weekend?

It’s pretty bad when some jerk takes it right on the eve of the city’s famed Beatles Day. A 100-pound reward is being offered (which will actually go to charity) for its return.

Okay … that’s all for this post … but stay tuned as I do a little “catch-up” work over the next 24 hours! ‘Til then ..
see ya on the flip side …
